Arabica and Robusta are the two most common types of coffee beans. These are the two most widely cultivated coffee varieties globally, each offering its own unique flavor profile that caters to different tastes.
CHARACTERISTICS AND GROWING CONDITIONS OF ARABICA & ROBUSTA COFFEE
Due to its more demanding growing conditions, Arabica coffee is typically grown in high-altitude regions with cool climates and fertile soil. The ideal altitude for Arabica cultivation ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 meters above sea level, with an average temperature of about 15–24°C.

In contrast, Robusta coffee thrives at lower altitudes, from 200 to 800 meters, in hot and humid climates with temperatures ranging from 24–29°C. This makes it a popular variety grown in many of the world’s largest coffee-producing countries, including Vietnam.
DIFFERENCE IN COFFEE BEAN SHAPE: ARABICA & ROBUSTA
Arabica and Robusta also differ in their bean shapes. Arabica beans are larger, oval-shaped, and have a distinct curved groove in the middle, forming an “S” shape. On the other hand, Robusta beans are smaller, rounder, and typically have a straighter groove. When roasted, Arabica beans maintain a light and even color, while Robusta beans develop a darker, shinier appearance.

This difference not only helps consumers easily distinguish between the two types of coffee at first glance but also reflects the contrast in flavor found in every cup.
FLAVOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ARABICA AND ROBUSTA
Arabica is often compared to a gentle melody, with its light acidity, sweet aftertaste, and a rich aroma ranging from floral and fruity to chocolate and caramel. On the other hand, Robusta, with its strong bitterness and caffeine content twice that of Arabica, is more like a drumbeat, providing a quick and invigorating burst of energy.
In Vietnam, Arabica coffee is most commonly grown in the northern mountainous provinces, particularly in Sơn La.
